The story

Last summer I got a nice phone call from my customer in the south of Sweden. His summer vacation had just started and appropriately the engine of his (an engineer of polymer chemistry) boat had broken down. He thought this should never happen again, a man shall get to the sea, when he wants to. So he asked if we could modify an electric motor for him.

We started to study and explore the assignment, but could not find an applicable construction to customize an island commute/utility?? boat. Batteries are large and heavy. Wrong balance, too wide hulls for energy saving drive, too big waves. “Well, then, build one. Make a new, light and as fast a version as possible.”, he said.

The client gave us unbelievable freedom to create “a great boat to commute”. This is what is being created in our workshop at the moment: ~ 400 kg of epoxy composites, ~500 kg of electrotechnology, over 20 knots. Stable and easy to handle. Merione 22 Light Cruiser is a multifunctional novelty boat. When building it, we combined our expertise of light structures with modern electric propulsion technology and achieved surprising properties.

Merione is equipped with high quality electric propulsion. Thanks to the hull design and low weight of the boat, the instant power of the electric motor speeds Merione up to more than 20 knots in no time.

Merione is compatible with a hybrid solution, inboard drives or normal outboard motor if an electric motor is not an option.

Merione’s frame was designed by Pekka Eivola. Pekka is specialized in optimizing watercraft hydrodynamics.

His expertise shows in Merione’s position, wave elevation and minimal hull resistance – as well as directional stability at slow speed.

Merione’s deck and interior were designed by Pekka Vahtera. Smallscale/Tailored production allows various modifications. Pekka has combined various functions in the structures without compromising quality. Versatile and exact use of raw materials helps save natural resources and promotes sustainable development.

Pekka has combined several functionalities in the overall construction – without making any compromises, though. For example the rails and handles have been designed so that they are a part of the detachable roof, actually making it detachable. The roof has 3 positions: traditional hard-top, slow fishing and day-cruiser.

The modular structure of the Merione makes it also possible to modify the boat’s functionality and propulsion systems flexibly. A front cabin and / or internal engine are also options. Changes can be made whenever, also to an already finished boat, thus expanding the life of the boat and promoting sustainability.
